Arne Exton, the developer of several GNU/Linux distributions and Android-x86 derivatives, was more than happy to inform us earlier today, September 14, about the immediate availability of a new build of his AndEX OS.

For those of you who are not in the loop, we want to inform you from the start that AndEX is a commercial OS based on the Android-x86 project, but tweaked by Mr. Exton to offer you the latest version of the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop mobile operating system from Google, which you will be able to use on your desktop computer or laptop (see below for supported hardware).

Another interesting thing about AndEX is that it comes with the GAPPS (Google Apps) package pre-installed, which means that you will have access to various Google applications, such as Google Play Store, Google Maps, YouTube, or Google Play Services. Additionally, the OS includes useful apps like Facebook and OfficeSuite 8, and costs $9 (€8).

"My new build of Android-x86 Lollipop 5.1.1 has GAPPS pre-installed, i.e. Google Play Services, Google Play store, Maps, YouTube and more apps," says Arne Exton. "AndEX 150914 is totally error-free. When running AndEX live you will get some error messages during the setup of your wireless connection and logging into your Google account, but nothing serious."

What's new in AndEX Build 150914

The biggest new feature of AndEX Build 150914 is the addition of the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system, and the inclusion of a customized Linux 4.0.8-exton-android-x86 kernel package. This new build of AndEX has been successfully tested on a wide range of hardware, including Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, Panasonic, Samsung, Thinkpad, and Toshiba laptops.

AndEX is a rolling-release operating system, which means that existing AndEX users don't need to buy the new version. Build 150914 replaces build 150611. All you have to do is make sure that you have the latest updates applied. On the other hand, those who want to buy AndEX should visit the developer's website for more details.
