WALDIO means better flash memories with longer life

Under the name of WALDIO, or Write Ahead Logging Direct IO, the new tech will slow down the rate of decay, boost performance and increase smartphone battery life.

Flash memory storage has, in general, a major problem, it has a limited number of write/erase cycles and ages with use. If a user will constantly write on such a memory chip, dead sectors in the drive will appear slowing down the writing process used by apps. Moreover, a writing process that takes longer and longer seriously affects battery life, this way devices like smartphones that use such technology will have shorter and shorter battery lives.

However, the WALDIO tech helps this issue by replacing the SQLite database management system in all Android devices that degrades flash memory faster than necessary.

Regarding this improvement, WALDIO will optimize the SQLite IO using block pre-allocation with explicit journaling, group synchronizations, and header embedding.

WALDIO data compression offers faster speed and longer life

Tests of the WALDIO on existing Android products showed a significant reduction in the total IO volume when performing a number of operations, which compressed all the data transferred to 1/6 of the original data layout system.

In other words, WALDIO simply records smaller amounts of data to flash memory in order to preserve its lifespan.

Apparently, the test caused 4.6 times the command performance compared to default methods, while the memory is free to do other things. That means smartphones could become 20 times faster and specific tasks while the battery life will last a bit longer.

The developers hope that, this way cheaper phones will have better performance and the memory will last longer and also perform much better. However, it is unknown on what memory chip or Android system this method has been tested, but a more comprehensive IO using block pre-allocation has been published during the USENIX Annual Technical Conference in Santa Clara yesterday.
