Today, November 17, 2016, Red Hat, the world's leading provider of open source solutions, was pleased to announce the general availability of Microsoft's SQL Server on Linux Public Preview for its Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system.

The news comes just one day after Canonical's announcement that the Public Preview of Microsoft SQL Server on Linux was made available to users of the popular Ubuntu operating system, and it now looks like you can install SQL Server on your Red Hat Enterprise Linux computers as well, enjoying a powerful and advanced relational database management system.

"The next version of SQL Server on Linux, Microsoft’s data management and business analytics platform, is now available as a public preview on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. SQL Server on Linux Public Preview provides users with a choice of development languages, data types and deployment methods, and now features support for docker-formatted Linux containers," reads today's announcement.

Microsoft's .NET Core also available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux

As expected, the availability of Microsoft's SQL Server for Red Hat Enterprise Linux comes as huge news for corporations and businesses where Red Hat's powerful Linux-based operating system is deeply appreciated and heavily used for both cloud and local infrastructures. SQL Server on Linux promises access to the SQL Hands-on Lab hosted on Microsoft Azure, but the Public Preview is not supported for production.

Soon, customers will be able to access images of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system on Azure with the SQL Server Public Preview pre-installed. This is not Red Hat's first rodeo with Microsoft, as the company also announced a few months ago the availability of Microsoft's .NET Core open source project for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. In related news, Red Hat announced the release of Red Hat Software Collections 2.3 and Red Hat Developer Toolset 6.
