Rapid Photo Downloader developer Damon Lynch announced this past weekend the release of the first Beta build of the upcoming Rapid Photo Downloader 0.9 series of the open-source and free photo and video downloader for Linux PCs.

Rapid Photo Downloader 0.9 will be the next major release of the application developed by a photographer for amateur and professional photographers alike. The new series has been in development for the past one a half years, during which it received an Alpha milestone approximately eleven months ago.

As expected, the developer prepares a bunch of new features for the upcoming version of Rapid Photo Downloader, and the one that was highlighted in the Beta announcement is an error report dialog whose purpose is to notify users about various issues that occur during transfers.

"The primary new feature is the error report window. It's one of those things you don't need until you really do need it. Error reports are now grouped by task: scanning a device, copying from a device, finalizing download subfolder and file names, and backing up," said Damon Lynch in the release announcement.

openSUSE and Fedora now officially supported

Among other new features coming to the major Rapid Photo Downloader 0.9 release, we can mention an updated installation script that now officially supports the OpenSuSE and Fedora Linux distributions, including derivatives like Korora. The installer is also capable of installing all dependencies without restarting.

A new option is available in the Preferences dialog to allow the program to ignore DNG date and time metadata when downloading these files from MTP devices, such as smartphones and tablets, to avoid false values created by many devices running either the Android 6 or 7 operating system series.

The app now checks for new versions through secure connections. As usual, various reported bugs were addressed and a bunch of code optimizations have been implemented. You can download the Rapid Photo Downloader 0.9 Beta 1 installer or source tarball right now from our website if you want to get an early taste of the new features.
