LINUX DISTRIBUTIONS

rPath Linux 2.0 Launched

- The size decreased, power increased

By: Daniel Voicu, Linux Editor

rPath Linux announced the second major release of their Linux distribution, rPath Linux 2.0, a version that intends to be the next step in the evolution of
the rPath operating system. "In addition to a technology refresh (new versions of included packages), rPath Linux 2 is better tuned as a platform to show off your work." - says Michael K. Johnson in the release announcement.

rPath Linux 2 is much smaller than its predecessor, with a Linux kernel that's almost a third smaller, while the group-appliance-platform recommended base software set is half as large in this version than it was in rPath Linux 1. The default boot loader was changed to syslinux, a highly extensible and capable application.

Thanks to the new Appliance Installer feature, you can set up your appliance software on systems in a few minutes, and it takes only a small amount out of your system memory. As 'customization' seems to be the key word of rPath, you get a brandable boot splash, which you can modify as you please.

rPath Linux is a Linux-based operating system built with the Conary distributed software management system. Based on many years of Linux software distribution, management and packaging development experience, Conary is designed to automate all the tasks that have made it complicated to build Linux distributions.

rPath has a single mission: to provide system software that is easily adjusted to suit matchless application needs. Developed with the Conary distributed software management system, rPath Linux is not only a powerful distribution, but also a base technology explicitly designed to enable you to create purpose-built operating system images using the rBuilder Online technology.
