The store that sells the accessories says “originals” are only sold by Apple

A video claiming to showcase “leaked” iPad 5 Smart Covers has been shot down after the Alibaba store that sells them confirmed that “original” ones are only sold by Apple.

The people at Unboxtherapy this week posted a YouTube video with what they claimed to be some “New iPad 5 Smart Covers.” Granted they didn’t say they were 100% certain, the covers were real. And it appears they’re not.

According to 9to5mac, current-selling Smart Covers no longer have metal-hinges, yet these ones do. These “leaked” cases also sell for $5/€3.7 a piece. The folks at Apple sell theirs for six times that amount.

Finally (and this is probably the most conclusive evidence that the leaked covers aren’t genuine), these alleged iPad 5 Smart Covers are sold by Alibaba in China.

Apple-made Smart Covers wouldn’t be available for sale before the actual tablet is released (and certainly not so many of them), and Alibaba has actually admitted that “original” smart covers are only sold by Apple.
