The pie is made with bacon, sausages, beans and eggs, packs 800 calories per serving

A hospital canteen in the city of Dundee in Scotland is now getting loads of bad publicity, and it's all because of one rather unusual treat it likes to serve its customers.

The bizarre meal, which some refer to as a guaranteed heart attack on a plate, is basically a pie whose ingredients include bacon, regular sausages, black pudding, i.e. a type of blood sausage, beans and eggs.

This so-called heart attack pie, a photo of which is available next to this article, is estimated to pack about 800 calories per serving. Given its ingredients, it does not take a doctor to figure out it's not exactly healthy.

Granted, nobody has until now been so bold as to question its deliciousness. What folks are concerned about is that it's being served at a canteen located next to the Ninewells Hospital's cardiac rehabilitation ward.

“It should never be anywhere near a hospital. It is laden with fat, salt and without a vegetable in sight,” Professor Mike Lean, chair of Human Nutrition as Glasgow University, said in a statement, as cited by Daily Mail.

“There are so many huge and obese staff and patients here, it's the last place that should be selling something like this,” added one of the patients currently undergoing treatment at the Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Scotland.

Despite complaints voiced by health experts and patients, the folks in charge of running the canteen can't figure out what all this fuss is about. They say that healthier treats are also available, and that it's not up to them to tell people what they can and can't eat.

“There are a wide range of meals, snacks and drinks available for the public and staff to choose from including healthy breakfast options such as cereals, fresh orange juice, low fat yogurts and fresh fruit,” a spokesperson for the hospital said in a statement.

In case anyone was wondering, the now highly controversial heart attack pie sells for £1.50 (approximately €1.8 / $2.5) per serving. It's still unclear whether or not, following all this commotion, the hospital canteen will at least think about no longer serving it.

Then again, perhaps it's not such a bad idea to have hospital canteens sell pie made with bacon, sausages, beans, and all sorts of other treats known to cause serious health trouble if consumed in excess. Just as long as the dish is accompanied by a side of heart medication, that is.
