Qualcomm is gearing up to release the Snapdragon 820 processors in the not too distant future, and in order to build hype around the new platform, the US chip giant has been consistently teasing some of its highlights for the last few weeks.

This week, the company has taken the opportunity to announce Quick Charge 3.0, a technology that will be offered with the Snapdragon 820. We can expect to see the first mobile devices bundling this platform arrive in the wild sometime around March 2016.

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology was pretty awesome too, allowing phones to charge from 0% to 60% in just under 30 minutes. But the chip maker continued to find ways to improve upon it. Thus, Quick Charge 3.0 was born.

Quick Charge 3.0 takes things to the next level

The company says you should expect to see spectacular results, as devices incorporating this technology are expected to be able to juice up from 0 to 80% in just 35 minutes. That’s pretty mind-blowing, right?

Apart from the amazing charging speeds, it’s the first time that Qualcomm makes use of the INOV technology (stands for Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage) for its rapid charging processes.

The system helps the device figure out how much voltage it should request. Moreover, it also provides a wide array of voltage options. To compare, Quick Charge 2.0 only allowed for 5V, 9V, 10V and 20V. With Quick Charge 3.0, the phone can select 200mV increments, anything between 3.6V and 20V. Furthermore, UBS Type-C is supported.

Apart from the Snapdragon 820 we mentioned above, other chipsets that are expected to be given the Quick Charge 3.0 treatment include the Snapdragon 620, 618 and 430. Which means we shouldn’t expect to see the technology become available this year, but in 2016.

Quick Charge 2.0 was pretty popular, with more than 20 OEMs supporting the standard. Moreover, more than 90 different accessories were built with support for it as well. So Quick Charge 3.0 is expected to attract even more parties.

It all sounds pretty exciting and we’re looking forward to seeing the first devices bundling this system in the first months of 2016.
