Qualcomm rolls out two new chipsets for the mid-range market

Last year, Qualcomm unveiled a mid-range and an entry-level chip, the Snapdragon 410 and Snapdragon 210 with support for LTE, respectively, and today the company is announcing a refresh of the duo, which brings minor increments to the level of power.

The newcomers are dubbed the Snapdragon 412 and Snapdragon 212 and we’re going to see what they are all about in what follows.

The Snapdragon 412

The silicon piece features 64-bit capable Cortex-A53 cores and Adreno 306 GPU to form the setup. In comparison to last year’s Snapdragon 410, the newer one has its CPU and GPU running at higher frequencies and improved memory speeds.

Even so, the chipset is still manufactured using the 28nm process, but now the clock speed has been improved to 1.4GHz. As you can see, there’s a slight increase compared to the Snapdragon 410 which ran at 1.2GHz. Even so, the processor inside the third-gen Moto G (2015) was spotted being able to support clock speeds of 1.4GHz, too.

The Snapdragon 412 comes with support for 1920 x 1200 displays and fullHD video capture and playback from cameras of up to 13MP. It features X5 LTE connectivity (Cat4, 150Mbps) along with Wi-Fi, b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and USB 2.0. Last but not least, QuickCharge 2.0 support is also to be found on board.

The Snapdragon 212

Moving along, we have the Snapdragon 212 which offers 32-bit Cortex-A7 cores and Adreno 304 graphics. Like the chip we detailed for you above, the Snapdragon 212 is also built on 28nm technology. The CPU clocking speed has been upgraded from 1.1GHz to 1.3GHz.

The Snapdragon 212 will soon find its way into low-end smartphones with features like support for 720p screens and up to 1080p video (both H.264 and H.265). It works with up to 8MP cameras. In the connectivity department, the menu covers pretty much the same aspects, including Cat.4 LTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1+ BLE, USB 2.0 with Quick Charge 2.0.

We should also mention that both chipsets work in concert with CDMA carriers, too. New devices taking advantage of the new silicon pieces should start making an appearance on the market soon enough.
