Today, June 16, 2016, Qt Company has been proud to announce the final release and general availability of the long-anticipated Qt 5.7 GUI (Graphical User Interface) toolkit for all supported platforms.

As many of you expected, Qt 5.7 is a major release that brings exciting new features and technologies for any and all Qt application developers out there, no matter if they're using a GNU/Linux distribution or the latest Windows 10 and macOS operating systems.

Qt 5.7 GUI toolkit arrives three months after the previous major update, Qt 5.6, and it looks like it's a worthy upgrade. It brings support for Raspberry Pi 3 devices, a port of the Qt NFC API (Application Programming Interface) to Google's Android mobile operating system, Qt Creator 4.0, and new functionality in existing modules.

"I’m very happy to announce that Qt 5.7 is now available. It’s been only 3 months since we released Qt 5.6, so one might expect a rather small release with Qt 5.7. But apart from the usual bug fixes and performance improvements, we have managed to add a whole bunch of new things to this release," says Qt Company's Lars Knoll.

C++11, Qt 3D, Qt Quick Controls 2, and more

Qt 5.7 comes with an updated license as the open-source software is now distributed under the LGPL version 3 and GPL version 2 for almost all core components. It also provides GPL version 3 for Qt Creator 4.0, a change that also allowed the project's development team to finally unify their Qt for Application Development offering, bringing the same content in both the open source and commercial versions of Qt.

Also new in Qt 5.7 is support for a C++11 compliant compiler to build and use Qt, and the integration of a Qt 3D module for creating whole new and modern user experiences in three dimensions (see the video below for details). There are also the much-improved Qt Quick Controls 2 library of QML-based UI controls (see the second video below for more details) and, of course, new Technology Previews of upcoming modules.

Among these, we can mention Qt Wayland Compositor, which promises to let users create their own compositor for the next-gen Wayland display server. Download Qt 5.7 binary and source packages for GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, and macOS operating systems right now via our website.
