Softpedia was informed today, January 16, 2017, by the developers of the Debian-based Q4OS GNU/Linux distribution about the availability of a new stable build of the 1.8 series.

Based on the recently released Debian GNU/Linux 8.7 "Jessie" operating system, Q4OS 1.8.2 "Orion" is now the most advanced version of the distro, shipping with all 173 bug fixes and security updates implemented by the Debian Project in the new Debian GNU/Linux release.

Additionally, this second maintenance update to the  Q4OS 1.8 "Orion" series introduces the rewrite of the Q4OS Update Manager, an in-house built graphical update management utility that fetches the latest software updates and security patches from the official channels, and it can also be used for upgrading the operating system.

"Important security patches have been applied and core system packages have been updated. All the updates are immediately available for existing Q4OS users from the regular Q4OS repositories," revealed the Q4OS devs for Softpedia. "Other Q4OS specific fixes and under the hood improvements are delivered as usual."

The first GNU/Linux distribution to be based on Debian GNU/Linux 8.7

It's safe to say that Q4OS 1.8.2 is the first GNU/Linux distribution to be based on Debian GNU/Linux 8.7, but work on the next major version, Q4OS 2.2 "Scorpion," continues as the Debian Project also nears end of development cycle for the Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Strech" operating system, upon which Q4OS 2.2 will be based.

The Q4OS team promises to release the "Scorpion" series as soon as Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" is out, which should happen sometime in spring 2017. Q4OS 2.2 will be a long-term support version supported for at least five years with security patches and software updates. Until then, you can now download Q4OS 1.8.2 "Orion."

If you're using the Q4OS "Orion" series on your personal computer, please try to keep in mind that you don't have to download the new ISO images released today to update. Instead, open the Q4OS Update Manager utility and apply all the available package updates.
