Puppy Linux developer Barry Kauler announced today the release and immediate availability for download of Quirky Linux 8.2 "Xerus" operating system that uses Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) binary packages.

Built using the woofQ Quirky Linux build system and binary packages from the Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, Quirky Linux 8.2 is fully compatible with all of the software repositories of Ubuntu Linux. The system is now powered by the Linux 4.11.11 kernel that's patched with AUFS support.

"Version 8.2 has many architectural improvements and package upgrades, including new packages JWMDesk, UrxvtControl and Take-a-Shot," said Barry Kauler in the release notes. "Among architectural improvements, the overlay filesystem has been dumped in favor of aufs, mime-handling fixes, and network-connection refinements."

Xine replaces VLC, SeaMonkey updated to version 2.48 Beta 1

Among the improvements and changes implemented in the Quirky Linux 8.2 release, we can mention better support for the NTFS file system, the implementation of several apps, including aemenu-pango, bcm, JWMDesk, replaceit, Take-a-shot, and UrxvtControl, and better support for certain network connection.

The VLC Media Player was replaced with Xine, SeaMonkey Internet suite was updated to version 2.48 Beta 1, there's now a new multi-colour theme, the woofQ build system received some performance improvements, and the OverlayFS filesystem was replaced with the AUFS one for the ISO image.

Quirky Linux 8.2 also includes multiple under-the-hood improvements and fixes, and updates several components to their latest available versions. Mime handling for markdown and .tar.xz were added as well, and the new system theme features deep-blue backgrounds and multi-colour foregrounds with bold text.

You can download Quirky Linux 8.2 right now via our web portal for x86_64 (64-bit) computers. Existing Quirky Linux 8.1.6 users won't be able to update to version 8.2 just yet as the developer has not released a Service Pack because of some issues that he wants to investigate first. A Quirky Linux 8.2.1 point release should be available shortly as a Service Pack PET package though.
