The team at Sony in charge of the PlayStation Network is announcing that at the moment the service is still affected by some issues, with an unknown number of users who have a PlayStation 4 or a PS3 currently unable to use some of its core features.

The official status site for the PSN explains that both account management and the Store are currently affected, and gamers are unable to get new content, redeem codes, download games or search for them.

PlayStation Network also has issues with the sign-in process, and the video streaming component of the service is also affected.

Sony is not saying how many PS4 and PS3 gamers are affected, but it says that it is investigating the issues and wants to have a solution implemented as soon as possible.

PlayStation Network had an extensive maintenance period that started late yesterday night, although the company has not offered any details on the upgrades that it is making to the infrastructure and the new functionality that might be added.

The PSN is crucial to the success that the PlayStation 4 has been enjoying since it was launched, and downtime is a problem both for users and for the company.

The future of gaming is linked to network infrastructure

Since the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 were launched, both Microsoft and Sony have been investing heavily to make sure that the Xbox Live and the PSN are secure, stable and offer a wide variety of services.

More and more gamers are buying their video games online, without ever going to a store, and the services also offer access to video, music, TV shows, and a variety of apps.

Rumors are saying that the Xbox Live service will get a major revamp in the fall, linked to the launch of the Windows 10 operating system, which will include a more relaxed approval process for the applications created by third parties.

Sony has also been expanding the options that PSN is offering and seems to have had more success than Microsoft with its own first-party content, ordering a second season of the Powers series.

The two companies are working together to make sure that DDoS attacks on both services no longer pose a problem for users in the long term.
