Sony confirms the financial figures for its PlayStation division, and during the first quarter of its financial year, it's managed to ship over 3 million PS4 units. According to Microsoft's own data, the company sold 1.4 million Xbox consoles, both One and 360 units, during the same time frame.

The new generation console war may have started out pretty even but soon enough it became clear that the PS4 console is much more popular than the Xbox One. After several price cuts, major bundles, and all sorts of maneuvers from Microsoft, things started looking up for the Xbox One, but at least for now, the PS4 still reigns supreme all around the world.

The latest financial figures from Sony and Microsoft are quite interesting

This week, both Sony and Microsoft revealed their financial earnings for the first quarter in the 2016 financial year and the figures paint a pretty grim picture for the Xbox One.

First up, Microsoft continues to bundle up the shipment figures of the Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles. As such, it confirms that it's shipped to retailers 1.4 million units in the period between April 1 and June 30.

Sony confirms that, in the same period, it's shipped 3 million PS4 units, without confirming any data for the PS3 or PS Vita consoles. The Japanese company did, however, explain that the figures represent an increase over the 2.7 million PS4 units it shipped in the same period last year.

Given this increase, Sony has revised its sales forecast for the 2016 financial year, as it now hopes to sell 16.5 million PS4 units until March 31, 2016. Previously, it estimated that just 16 million consoles will be sold until that time.

Even so, Microsoft is still confident in its own Xbox One and hopes to spark even more interest via games, the Windows 10 operating system, and the many new features coming to the console, according to GameSpot.
