Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH announced today the release of the first maintenance update to the latest Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) 5 series of open-source, Linux-based operating systems.

Arriving more than three months after Proxmox VE 5.0 release, Proxmox VE 5.1 is a point release adding updated components based on the upstream repositories of the Debian GNU/Linux 9.2 "Stretch" operating system, along with the Linux 4.13 kernel series and the latest Ceph 12.2 "Luminous" and ZFS 0.7.2 releases.

"Proxmox VE 5.1 comes with production-ready Ceph cluster packages. The virtualization platform integrates Ceph v12.2 Luminous, the long-term stable release of the software-defined storage solution. Users can now implement Ceph clusters as distributed storage solution in production," reads today's announcement.

Starting with the Proxmox VE 5.1 release, all Ceph cluster packages will be readied by the Proxmox devs, and it looks like the Bluestore FS Ceph OSD storage backend is now the default, delivering extra performance up to 200 percent, built-in compression, as well as full data check-summing.

Interrupted ZFS receive can now be resumed

Proxmox VE 5.1 also comes with ZFS 0.7.2 OpenZFS implementation for Linux, which optimizes the statistics, improves the storage usage analyzation, and allows the resume of interrupted ZFS receive thanks to the implementation of resumable "zfs send/receive" functionality.

In addition, the Proxmox VE 5.1 update reduces CPU usage, improves overall performance through hardware-accelerated check summing, and updates the web-based management interface with enhancements to the "Create VM" dialog and the ability to select high availability management dialog VMs through a drop-down menu.

Other than that, Proxmox VE 5.1 optimizes the shutdown functionality of the system management level and allows users to import the OVF (Open Virtualization Format) packaging format using the command-line. Support for SLES container has been added as well, and you can download Proxmox VE 5.1 right now from our website.
