The users are not happy and that's an understatement

Project Cars 2 is a new game announced by Slightly Mad Studios, and it's being funded through the World of Mass Development portal. A SteamOS version has been promised, but it's a weird announcement since the first games still don't have a Linux version despite being promised as well.

The first Project Cars title was released on May 7, 2015, so it's a very recent game. The fact that we hear about a sequel so early is rather interesting, and there are very few studios that have done this in the past. The developers from Slightly Mad Studios are also promising to release a SteamOS version, which in this case just means Linux support. The weird bit is that they haven't released a Linux version of their original Project Cars, so it's likely that some users won't take their announcement too seriously.

In any case, if Project Cars 2 becomes a reality, it will probably be one of the most advanced racing titles on Linux. As it stands right now, this particular gaming genre is not well represented, at least not on Steam. There are a few free racing games in the wild, but nothing comes close to titles like Grid Autosport or Project Cars.

What happens with the first game?

This is probably the first question users will ask, especially the ones who just bought the first game. The developers from Slightly Mad Studios have already said that they are going to continue to provide updates and DLCs for the old title, which is kind of reassuring.

Now, the studio has already started to work on the second game, and they are raising money through the World of Mass Development portal. It will probably take a while until they reach the £7 million (about $11 million), so it's safe to say that it will take at least another two years until we'll have the new game in a stable form.

"With an existing schedule of ON DEMAND content already underway to continue providing Project CARS with fresh new features, updates, and great things to play with throughout the year, Slightly Mad Studios now turns its attention to the future with the announcement of the continuation of the franchise with Project CARS 2. And once again, the sequel will be created, tested, and ultimately approved by you – the gamers - through the WMD Portal crowd-funding platform," says Slightly Mad Studios.

The community response hasn't been kind, at least until now, ranging from the skeptic to insulted. It remains to be seen if they manage to keep the community at bay.
