14 DAY TRIAL // Last Thursday, police crews in Belfast, Ireland, arrested a 19-year-old man believed to have had a relationship with a minor and left her pregnant. The young man was taken into custody after somebody reported the pregnancy to the police.
The future mother, a 12-year-old schoolgirl, lives in the Lenadoon area of the city, DM reports. She's only recently realized that she is pregnant and hasn't yet gotten over the shock of learning she might soon be a parent. Apparently, neither has her family.
The girl might become one of Britain's youngest moms
Not that there is a competition going on, but word has is that, if she carries the pregnancy to term, this 12-year-old schoolgirl from Belfast might become one of Britain's youngest moms.
The title of Britain's youngest mom presently belongs to a girl from London, who conceived when just 11 and who delivered her child back in last year's April, just a few months after turning 12.
Then there's another girl from Edinburgh, who became a mother in 2006, at the age of just 12 years and 8 months. Previously, the record was held by a pair who conceived at the age of 14.
Authorities promise not to let the 19-year-old get away with it
As mentioned, the 19-year-old soon-to-be-father was arrested last Thursday after somebody contacted local authorities in Belfast and informed them of his affair with the 12-year-old.
He's since been released on bail, but authorities are still investigating him. At 12, the girl is considered too young to give consent, and so the 19-year-old risks being charged with rape.
“Police arrested a 19 year old man in the West Belfast area on Thursday 1st October in relation to a sexual offense. The man has been released on police bail pending further inquiries,” a police spokesperson told the press in an interview.
If charged and found guilty, the young man might be sent to jail. So far, the girl and her family haven't made any comments on the affair.
