Users should be wary of Popcorn Time website clones, which might be used in spreading malware and scams

Popcorn Time, the immensely popular BitTorrent client for streaming video content (mostly pirated movies), has issued a warning for anyone interested to listen.

The app's success has garnered the attention of shady characters that set up websites with similar names and almost identical graphics, spreading ads, scams, and even malware.

On a post on their blog, the team wanted to disassociate with any of those services and let users know that they might be subjecting themselves to possible dangerous situations by installing any kind of application that's not distributed through the official Popcorn Time website.

Because Popcorn Time's code is open sourced, other versions of the application have surfaced, with the most famous being the ones run from the popcorn-time.se domain, and one specialized in adult movies, under the name of Porn Time.

While none of those two seems to be distributing infected applications, the Popcorn Time dev team warns users that they might "end up with viruses, adwares or other trojan horses infecting your machine" by visiting any website that makes use of the Popcorn Time branding and some kind of variant of its application's code.
