The squirrel is yet to apologize to the woman, reports say

Earlier this week, law enforcement officers in the city of Bottrop in Germany arrested a squirrel guilty of following a young woman around and giving her the creeps.

A devoted stalker, the squirrel hopped just behind the woman for quite a while. It failed, however, to keep a low profile, and so its target realized that she was being trailed.

DM tells us that, when she first figured out that she was being stalked by the nutty squirrel, the woman attempted a few maneuvers to evade the critter. Nothing worked.

Annoyed and quite possible also a bit scared of the entire affair, the woman called local authorities and asked that law enforcement officers come to her rescue.

The squirrel was taken into custody

It was this past Wednesday morning that the Bottrop woman contacted the police and pleaded for help getting rid of the squirrel. Having captured the critter, the officers sent to investigate this case brought it back to the station with them.

Rather than throw it behind bars or interrogate it, however, the officers fed the squirrel some apple slices and offered it some water with honey to drink. Clearly exhausted and hungry, the animal accepted the treat wholeheartedly.

Neither the police nor the woman who asked for their assistance when she couldn't shake off the critter could explain the squirrel's behavior. More so since, except for being tired and famished, the animal appeared to be perfectly healthy.

Then again, it could be that it was precisely because it was starving and desperate to get something to eat that the squirrel decided to follow the woman, just in case she might want to share a bagel.

It is understood that, after enjoying lunch at the local police station in Bottrop, Germany, the squirrel was taken to a local animal welfare center. Here, specialists will keep it under observation for a few days. If the critter doesn't show any signs of illness, it will be released in a forested area.
