50 million downloads reached in just 19 days

Pokemon Go has become a worldwide sensation, and everyone seems to be playing it (well, except Windows Phone users), and new statistics reveal that Niantic’s title has already reached record numbers.

Specifically, Pokemon Go has been downloaded 75 million times on both iOS and Android, despite the fact that it was released on July 5 and only in New Zealand, the US, and Australia, with market availability expanding throughout the month.

“To date, the game has been launched in just 32 of the more than 100 markets in which the App Store and Google Play operate, with more on the way. In all available App Store territories, the game is ranked No. 1 for downloads and revenue, including France and Hong Kong, its two most recently added regions,” mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower explains.

100 million downloads in 60 days?

Pokemon Go recorded 50 million downloads in just 19 days, thus overtaking smashing hits such as Color Switch, which needed 77 days to reach the same figure, and Candy Crush, with 112 days. And what’s more impressive is that Pokemon Go was available only in a handful of markets, and it wasn’t featured in any of the app stores it was available through, whereas the other record-breaking apps were.

“For most mobile games and apps, even reaching 10 million downloads is a marathon, but Pokémon GO made that and 50 million in a sprint. As it rolls out in additional regions over the coming weeks, the size of the markets will get smaller, but it will no doubt still hit the ground running. It may not be unreasonable for the game to pass 100 million downloads in its first 60 days, especially if some of the planned gameplay updates hit sooner rather than later,” the study estimates.

Certainly, the biggest challenge right now for Niantic is to maintain this high interest in Pokemon Go, as keeping such a game relevant for more than a couple of months is really difficult since new titles launch on a daily basis. The company has already announced several planned updates, in an attempt to keep users connected to the Pokemon world, so we’ll see how it goes in the coming months.
