14 DAY TRIAL // The development team behind the Point Linux project, a desktop-oriented GNU/Linux operating system based on the Debian's Stable branch, has announced the general availability of Point Linux 3.2.
Shipped with separate MATE and Xfce editions, Point Linux 3.2 is based on the recently released Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 "Jessie" operating system, thus borrowing many of its technologies, including the Linux 3.16 LTS (Long Term Support) kernel, as well as the LightDM 1.10.3 login manager.
Point Linux aims to be a very stable GNU/Linux distribution based only on thoroughly tested open-source software components from the upstream Debian Stable repositories. Therefore, Point Linux 3.2 ships today with the MATE 1.8.1 and Xfce 4.10 desktop environments.
What's new in Point Linux 3.2
Release highlights of Point Linux 3.2 include the Mozilla Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) web browser, Plymouth boot splash theme now displays a spinner, support for installing the OS from custom-made USB disk drives, and the ability to boot the Live ISO images from a local drive.
Besides the packages borrowed from the upstream Debian Stable repos, Point Linux 3.2 comes with various under-the-hood improvements, such as disabling of the 'virtualbox kernel service is not running' notification, removal of the Adobe Flash Player plugin for security reasons, as well as the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client.
Point Linux 3.2 is a Debian Stable-based operating system designed with the experienced user in mind, but it is also targeted at the business and IT sector. It offers Live and installable ISO images supporting 64-bit (amd64), 32-bit (i386), and 32-bit PAE (i686 PAE) hardware architectures. Each edition comes as Full and Core flavors.
