The PlayStation Network has been down for more than one hour and what initially seemed to be just a short-term downtime seems to be turning into a major issue for Sony, with the company currently offering no information on the cause of the problems the service is encountering.

The official site shows that users can sign-in their accounts, but they are unable to join in any sort of multiplayer action at the moment.

The Store is also unavailable, and no content can be downloaded, even if it has been purchased before, and the Now game streaming service is also affected by the issues.

It's unclear why the PlayStation 4 seems to be the center of the PSN issues at the moment, and Sony is not offering any sort of hints about when full functionality will be restored.

Bungie, Sledgehammer and other game developers have also noticed their fans of the PSN outage.

The company has long been inclined to deal with PlayStation Network issues in secrecy, only offering a limited amount of details and only when the problems it had to deal with were relatively big.

Some users are speculating that a massive Denial of Service attack is targeting the Sony infrastructure, although it's unclear what organization might be involved.

The PlayStation Network is crucial to the future of the PS4

Sony needs to move as fast as possible in order to both communicate with its users and to fix the problems because every minute of silence lowers the trust the gamers have in the company.

The PlayStation Network is very important to the evolution of the PlayStation 4 and represents one of the big reasons for its current lead in sales when compared to the Xbox One.

Sony says that it plans to offer more functionality for the service, adding more video games and introducing a range of exclusive and internally produced content, including a new season of the Powers series.

The Now concept will also be expanded upon, allowing gamers to stream video games without actually having to own them.

Both the PSN and the Xbox Live from Microsoft have been targeted by DDoS attacks in the past year and the companies are working to make them more secure and to discover the perpetrators.
