The team at Sony in charge of the PlayStation 4 is announcing that it is preparing to launch an entirely new version of the home console, which will be offered in both jet black and glacier white color, and will come with a range of improvements to the hardware.

Initially, the new PS4, with version number CUH-1200, will be offered in Japan towards the end of June, although the exact date has not been offered, and then the company is planning to reveal plans for North America, Europe, and other Asian markets.

The official announcement states that the new PlayStation 4 is designed to be 10 percent lighter than previous models and to use about 8% less power.

The company adds, "The surface of the new PS4 system’s HDD bay cover will come in a matte finish, giving the system a more casual look. With the new system, users can continue to enjoy unique and interactive entertainment experiences only available on PlayStation, including the wide array of game titles and strong network offerings."

An Ultimate Edition version of the PlayStation 4 is also prepared, and it seems that it will include a 1 TB hard drive and will also be initially offered in Japan.

The price of the core version of the home console will remain at 399 dollars or Euro.

Sony might introduce a major price cut later in the year

The fact that the PlayStation 4 is getting a new model shows that the hardware has significantly evolved since the device was first introduced in the fall of 2013.

Improvements to both energy efficiency and weight will be a draw for some players, but a price cut will probably be more attractive to the potential buyers of the platform.

Sony has said that it does not have plans to introduce one soon because it believes that the PlayStation 4 is offering a lot of value at its current price point.

The company might make an official announcement later in the year in order to get a boost in sales during the very important holiday season.

Microsoft has aggressively cut the price of the Xbox One to make it more attractive, and recently the company has announced a promotion, giving players a free game if they pick up the console from Best Buy.
