It seems that the team at Sony in charge of the future of the PlayStation 4 home console is at the moment testing a major update for the firmware of the device, labeled 3.0, which is designed to introduce a number of major tweaks to the functionality of the platform.

NeoGAF has translated information from a Japanese site which states that the company is still exploring various possibilities and will probably make an announcement about the improvements when it has decided on a full list.

The 3.0 firmware for the PlayStation 4 will include a new Event section on the menu, which will allow gamers to quickly find events created by Sony and partners and to then join and watch them easily.

Gamers will also get a new Community element in the Friend menu, designed to support larger groups of gamers with shared interests.

Additionally, Sony is introducing Now Playing, which shows the titles that members are currently engaged with and allows users to quickly request to join one or to broadcast the action.

The messaging features of the PlayStation 4 are improved so that gamers can start a party easily when using them, and the home console can also broadcast via YouTube and can upload short clips to Twitter.

Sony is also making tweaks to the way sub-accounts for kids and parental controls work.

PlayStation 4 requires updates to keep its sales lead

At the moment, Sony is not saying when it plans to launch the 3.0 firmware for its home console, but it will probably aim to do so before the end of the year.

The company has been constantly adding new features to the platform since it was launched to make sure that it manages to keep a solid lead in terms of sales over the Xbox One.

The PlayStation 4 has managed to deliver more consoles to players both on a worldwide level and in the United States.

Now, Sony and Microsoft are using updated firmware, exclusive games and special content to try and convince gamers to pick up the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One during the important fall period of this year.
