A new image seems to suggest that Sony is at the moment testing a backwards compatibility solution that will allow gamers to, at one point, run PS2 titles on their modern PlayStation 4, although it's unclear what the exact technical solution will be.

The screenshot attached to this article has been posted on the Reddit associated with the platform and the original post was deleted, which some fans are taking as a sign that the source was under NDA and was not supposed to talk about the coming feature.

A lot of gamers are satisfied with the idea of getting a way of play older PS2 titles on a modern machine because they have favorite experiences that they would like to revisit without actually having to drag the older device out from storage.

The image does not explain whether Sony plans to allow gamers to use their older disks or whether they will have to download an entirely new version of the titles that's designed to work well on the PlayStation 4.

If the feature is really in testing, then the company might make an official announcement about it before the end of the year, aiming to introduce it via firmware update at some point in the coming year.

The PlayStation 4 is constantly evolving

Rumors about a backwards compatibility solution for the Sony home console surfaced almost as soon as it was launched, with sources inside the company saying that internal emulation is the solution chosen, with the possibility of adding graphics enhancements to the titles that will be launched.

The PlayStation Now streaming concept will only be used to cover games that were first offered on the PS3, while emulation is the solution for titles launched on the PS2 and maybe even the first home console from Sony.

At the moment, the company is focusing on the big firmware 3.0 update for the PlayStation 4, which is supposed to arrive in about a month and will introduce a range of improvements.

Gamers will have more options to upload content directly to YouTube and to Twitter and some new ways to select how they want to interact with friends.

At the moment, the Sony device is outselling the Xbox One from Microsoft both on a global level and in the United States.
