Pitivi, the popular free and open-source video editor for GNU/Linux distributions, is about to hit the 1.0 milestone and become a stable software that's ready to use for some serious video editing tasks.

More than nine months after the release of Pitivi 0.98 back in early December 2016, the development team has announced today that they've released the first RC (Release Candidate) milestone of the upcoming major Piviti 1.0 version, tagged as build 0.99 and dubbed "Ocean Big Chair."

While Pitivi 0.98 brought a lot of interesting improvements, among which we can mention better timeline performance, customizable keyboard shortcuts, and support for more muxers and encoders, there's no word on what's changed in Pitivi 0.99 (1.0 RC), so we can only assume that it's a bugfix release only.

"Early on this year, we got caught up in the Google Summer of Code. A lot of students hacked on Pitivi this spring, to get to know Pitivi better. As a result quite a few important fixes and improvements have been made. A big thank you to all of the students who contributed," said the devs in today's announcement.

Pitivi 1.0 is almost here, test the RC release now

There's a bit more work to be done before Pitivi 1.0 can become a reality, and, according to project's workboard, a total of 18 issues separate us from the final release of the free and open-source video editor. But, until then, you can download the Pitivi 1.0 Release Candidate and report any bugs you might encounter.

If compiling Pitivi from sources is not your thing, you can always install the video editor as a Flatpak on your favorite GNU/Linux distribution. We have to warn you though that a Release Candidate is still considered a development version, so don't use it for any production work just yet. The final Piviti 1.0 release should be out later this year!
