Nearly 8,000 supporters and counting at this point

iOS 11 has proved to be quite a software fiasco for iPhone owners, with a plethora of bugs reported since the first version landed in September 2017, including battery drain, app crashes, lag, and device freezes.

Unfortunately for users who upgraded to iOS 11, downgrading is no longer possible because Apple has stopped signing iOS 10 and previous releases, so iPhone users who’re not satisfied with the performance of their device on the current build of the operating system are not allowed to downgrade.

This is why a petition calls for Apple to sign all iOS versions shipped so far and allow users to downgrade, especially because the most recent releases substantially slow down older devices.

“Why is user deprived of the choice to go back to the iOS version his device was running very smoothly on?” the petition reads before emphasizing that customers “have no choice but to stay on this firmware and ‘enjoy’ your phone. YOUR phone.”

“Let us choose what’s better for us”

The petition emphasizes that it’s all a matter of choice for customers, and they take full responsibility for the risks created by running an older iOS version, including here unpatched security vulnerabilities.

“[It] is customer responsibility, if he/she cares about security, stay on newest firmware. If not, feel free to downgrade, even if it voids warranty,” the message reads.

Apple has recently accidentally signed older iOS versions and the number of customers who downgraded in just 10 minutes was impressive, and this can only be living proof that there are lots of iPhone and iPad buyers who would gladly go back to an older version of the operating system only to benefit from better performance.

Apple hasn’t obviously commented on this petition, and the chances are that the company will ignore it completely, but at this point, there are nearly 8,000 supporters who signed it in just a few days.
