PC-BSD developer Kris Moore was more than happy to announce today, April 4, 2016, the release and immediate availability for download of the PC-BSD 10.3 operating system.

PC-BSD 10.3 arrives hot on the heels of FreeBSD 10.3, on which it is based upon, and includes dozens of new features and improvements, such as support for the Q5 5.5.x GUI toolkit, support for the FreeBSD bootloader for the install media, along with optional support for the GRUB bootloader.

The major bootloader changes implemented in today's PC-BSD 10.3 release were done because the PC-BSD development team prepares for the next major version of the operating system, PC-BSD 11.0, which should see the light of day later this year using the FreeBSD bootloader for the installed system.

"This is currently planned to be the last maintenance release in the 10.X series, and we are currently working hard on the upcoming 11.0," said Kris Moore in today's announcement. "A very special thanks to all the developers, QA, translation and documentation teams for helping to make this release possible."

PC-BSD 10.3 comes preloaded with Lumina Desktop 0.8.8

PC-BSD's in-house built desktop environment, Lumina Desktop, has been updated to version 0.8.8 and it is included in this last maintenance release of the PC-BSD 10.x series, along with the latest software updates, such as Mozilla Firefox 45.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 38.6.0, and Chromium 48.0.2564.116.

Among other interesting changes, we can mention installer improvements for GPT and UEFI setups, better support for cleaning up old 'gmirror' installations, many remote replication fixes, and automatic playback of inserted CD/DVD media via the Mount Tray applet.
