OnePlus is hoping to immunize its phone with the update

The discovery of the Stagefright vulnerability in Android devices has led to a lot of digital ink flowing in the last few weeks. Some device manufacturers have already acknowledged the problem and promised monthly security updates to prevent anything like this from ever happening too soon.

Samsung and Google were the first ones to be providing Stagefright security fixes, but more phone makers are joining the club. For example, Motorola already announced the list of phones which would soon be getting a security check-up.

A few days ago, Chinese device maker OnePlus also announced it was rolling out the Oxygen OS update for its original OnePlus One model. While the recently launched OnePlus 2 runs Oxygen OS out of the box, things were a little bit trickier for the company’s first model.

International One units shipped with Cyanogen OS out of the box, but since launch the Cyanogen and OnePlus have parted ways. The former startup signed an exclusive deal with Indian device maker Micromax, which left OnePlus hanging.

OnePlus updates the One to Oxygen OS

The company had to reorient itself setting up a team mostly made up by ex-Paranoid Android members in order to create Oxygen OS which is currently running things on board on the newest flagship.

Now OnePlus is pushing out the Oxygen OS 1.0.2 update (which is sadly based still on Android 5.0 and not Android 5.1 Lollipop) for the One. Even so, the new build does bring about a Stagefright vulnerability fix, so you can be sure your phone will be immunized against the threat.

By contrast, the OnePlus 2 ships out with Oxygen OS 2.0 out of the box, which is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, but also includes some Android M features.

So it appears OnePlus mostly rolled out the 1.0.2 update for the One in order to patch the vulnerability. We expect the company to do the same for the OnePlus 2 soon enough.
