14 DAY TRIAL // Today, January 18, ownCloud Community Manager Jos Poortvliet informs us about the work that the ownCloud developers will do shortly for the Activities and Notifications apps of the self-hosting cloud server.
As many of our ownCloud readers know already, the Activities app gives them all kinds of useful information about what's happening in their ownCloud server, but now that the Notifications app kicked in, offering them a part of the information that was provided by the Activities app, the time has come for the two to go on their own way, offering users richer information about what's happening on the server.
"ownCloud has long had the 'Activities' app, which has provided a stream of information about happenings on the ownCloud server. The Notifications app was recently introduced, taking over some of the tasks the Activity app was used for. The goal is to more clearly separate the two rather different jobs, showing an activity stream and notifying users," said Jos Poortvliet, ownCloud Community Manager.
What users should expect from the two apps in the future
In upcoming versions of the ownCloud software, the developers aim to integrate support for a new notification API (Application Programming Interface) into most of the ownCloud apps. The new notification system will also be implemented in the ownCloud desktop and mobile clients, and third-party developers are urged to read the official documentation to learn how to integrate the new notification API for their applications.
The current stable version of ownCloud already includes the Notifications app, but starting with ownCloud 9, which ownCloud CTO Frank Karlitschek said that it would be a cool release, we should see the magical new notifications that promise to provide us with real-time information about everything that happens on our ownCloud servers.
