ownCloud has recently announced the availability of the first major release for the 9.x series of the open-source self-hosting cloud server software aimed at GNU/Linux operating systems.

ownCloud 9.1 Community Edition is now the latest stable and most advanced release of the ownCloud Server, which promises dozens of attractive new features, among which we can mention a bunch of innovative security enhancements, such as support for token-based authentication sessions and pluggable authentication support.

Additionally, ownCloud 9.1 introduces the ability to list all the devices that are connected to your personal user page, from where you'll be able to invalidate certain sessions. Device-specific tokens are supported as well in the ownCloud 9.1 release, giving users new ways to control the access to their personal and private cloud servers.

But wait, that's not all, as ownCloud 9.1 also ships with time-based one-time passwords (TOTP), which let you increase the security of your ownCloud account by using various modern services, such as the open-source implementation of the TOTP (Time-based One-time Password Algorithm) standard or Google Authenticator.

"ownCloud has partnered with PrivacyIDEA, an open source authentication server solution with a lot of experience with authentication, provided by Net Knights GmbH," reads the release announcement. "It is only a matter of weeks before ownCloud 9.1 Enterprise Edition will also be released and available to our customers."

Full federation, Collabora Online, and ultimate scalability

Other new features included in the ownCloud 9.1 Community Edition release are the availability of a Docker Image created in partnership with Collabora to offer users online collaborative document editing supporting popular file formats like ODF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, and PPTX, through the Collabora Online platform.

ownCloud 9.1 also introduces full federation support, ultimate scalability features for massive deployments, as well as many updated components, for apps like Contacts, Calendar, and ownCloud Mail. The latest release, ownCloud 9.1 Community Edition, is now available for download via our website, and all users are encouraged to upgrade.
