Today, ownCloud has just announced the immediate availability of the final version of ownCloud Client 1.8.
The new version brings many attractive features, among which we can mention integration with the default file managers of all supported operating systems, including GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows. As Nautilus (Files) is the most popular file manager on GNU/Linux OSes, the developers chose to integrate ownCloud Client with it.
The new desktop sharing functionality is implemented in Nautilus (Files)
This integration will allow users to share files directly from their desktop environments. As Nautilus is both a file and a desktop manager, the new ownCloud Client desktop sharing functionality will work with any open-source desktop environment where Nautilus is supported, including GNOME and Unity.
The desktop sharing functionality works by allowing the user to create a public link for a synced file via a new entry implemented in the right-click context menu. The link can be copied to the clipboard and share with friends, which will be able to immediately access the respective file.
“This release brings a new integration into the operating system file manager. With 1.8.0, there is a new context menu that opens a dialog to allow the user to create a public link on a synced file. This link can be forwarded to other users who get access to the file via ownCloud,” says Klaas Freitag in the official release announcement.
