ownCloud, Inc. is proud to announce today, December 11, that the Community Edition of its highly anticipated ownCloud 6 open source DIY (Do It Yourself) cloud server software is now available for download/upgrade with an improved design.
After the Beta version of ownCloud 6, released in November 2013, which gave us a very nice preview of what’s coming this winter for those of us who wanted more from ownCloud, here comes the final release with tons of new and innovative features to its dedicated users.
“ownCloud 6 is the fastest, easiest-to-use ownCloud yet. [...] It has a ton of cool new features that the community can use to safely and privately sync and share files – under their control.”
“And ownCloud Documents gives small groups the ability to edit documents together in real-time,” said Frank Karlitschek, leader and founder of the ownCloud project, as well as CTO of ownCloud, Inc.
ownCloud Documents is one of those innovative features that were implemented in ownCloud 6, offering live, online, and collaborative editing of standard documents, which can be created via a modern web interface, allowing users to securely share them with other users.
Moreover, the user interface in ownCloud 6 has been improved with real-time activity feeds, user avatars, undelete, and thumbnail previews for pictures and file types. A new web conflict dialog has been implemented, offering several options when replacing an existing file, and share file notification and example files (tutorials) have been added.
ownCloud 6 also introduces better performance across the board, including external system integration, encryption, and file sync. Developers who want to integrate ownCloud’s sharing functions in external applications have now a sharing REST API and ownCloud App API.
Last but not least, ownCloud 6 allows users to mount external Dropbox, FTPS, CIFS, Google Docs, S3, WebDAV, and Swift servers 10x faster than before, and the overall file-handling is more optimized and faster than ever.
