14 DAY TRIAL // Only four days after the release of the first Beta build of the upcoming VirtualBox 5.1 open-source and cross-platform virtualization software, today, June 7, 2016, Oracle has announced the availability of the second Beta version for public testing.
VirtualBox 5.1 will be a major release of the widely used virtualization manager that lets computer users run numerous operating systems like FreeBSD, Solaris, Microsoft Windows, or any GNU/Linux distribution on virtual machines for testing or other purposes.
As reported by us last week, VirtualBox 5.1 promises to rely no longer on the DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) framework for rebuilding its kernel modules on Linux kernel-based operating systems. Also, its graphical user interface (GUI) has been fully ported to the latest Qt5 technologies.
Here's what's new in VirtualBox 5.1 Beta 2
The second Beta release of VirtualBox 5.1 resolves various small issues that have been reported by users since the Beta 1 version, such as a crash with the GUI that occurred when the Beta pop-up notification dialog was displayed, and a Qt5 regression that didn't allow the full-screen layout to work on multiple monitors.
The VirtualBox SDK has been updated in this Beta 2 release to no longer use so much memory for the Java bindings web service. Disabling audio support in the Settings dialog works again, and it looks like support for the latest X.Org Server 1.18 display server has been added to the Solaris Additions.
Last but not least, VirtualBox 5.1 Beta 2, which you can download right now via our website for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems, adds better support for saving snapshots and provides several path fixes for DEB and RPM packages for older GNU/Linux operating systems by using its own Qt5 libraries.
