Oracle released two new maintenance updates of its open-source and cross-platform virtualization software, VirtualBox 5.1.22 and VirtualBox 5.0.40, for all supported operating systems, including GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Both VirtualBox 5.1.22 and VirtualBox 5.0.40 are bugfix releases that come about ten days after the launch of the previous updates, in this case VirtualBox 5.1.20 and VirtualBox 5.0.38. They include pretty much the same changes with small exceptions.

The common changes of both releases are fixes for two potential, rare hang and crash storage issues, both of which occurred under rare circumstances. Notable here is that the rare crash could occur during various file maintenance operations, such as merging of snapshots, or when asynchronous I/O was disabled.

Additionally, both VirtualBox 5.1.22 and VirtualBox 5.0.40 fix a software virtualization issue on Solaris hosts and repair an ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) backend regression on Linux hosts, from VirtualBox 5.1.20 and VirtualBox 5.0.38, along with the loading of OpenGL libraries on specific hosts.

mount.vboxsf symlink problem fixed

Among other changes implemented in the new VirtualBox maintenance releases, we can mention that VirtualBox 5.1.22 fixes five bugs, regressions from the 5.1 series that could affect Mac OS X hosts, related to VERR_IEM_INSTR_NOT_IMPLEMENTED Guru Meditation, under certain conditions.

VirtualBox 5.1.22 also addresses a problem with the mount.vboxsf symlink, which is a regression from version 5.1.20, and VirtualBox 5.0.40 includes a fix for a potential storage crash that could occur under rare circumstances when asynchronous I/O wasn't available or during file maintenance operations like merging of snapshots. Full changelogs are attached below for more details.

VirtualBox 5.1.22 and VirtualBox 5.0.40 are available for download for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now from our website. We recommend all users to update their VirtualBox installations to these latest maintenance releases as soon as possible for a bug-free VirtualBox experience.
