The first beta release of Opera Software's Opera 53 web browser is now ready for public testing bringing optimizations to a tab’s display and address bar colors.

Based on Chromium 66.0.3359.45, the upcoming Opera 53 web browser recently entered beta testing with a bunch of enhancements and optimizations, but also multiple bug and security fixes. Among these, the most important change appears to be the revamp of the appearances of tabs for Mac systems.

"Recently, for Mac users, it’s been difficult to find and manage a particular tab when many of them are open. We figured out a way to optimize this and made your plentiful tabs’ favicons more visible," said Opera's Kornelia Mielczarczyk. "To make it even more visible and easier to manage, clicking on a tab will expand it."

While this optimization to the way multiple tabs are handled is mostly targeted at Mac users, we believe it could also benefit Linux and Windows users. On top of this, Opera 53 beta revamps the address bar a little with a fresh coat of paint so you can be more productive when accessing your most used websites.

Bug fixes

In addition to the new improvements and features mentioned above, the first Opera 53 beta release addresses an issue with favicons for bookmarks not being displayed until you visit the website, as well as a crash for Mac users in Ukraine, which occurred when clicking the VPN button in the address bar after running a search.

Based on Chromium 67.0.3371.0, Opera 54 recently entered development and received its first developer release earlier this week with a bit of spring cleaning to reduce of the number of future bugs by removing hacked and mangled code, and address a crashes related to the "Capture full screen" button.

You can find the full changelogs here and here, and you can download both Opera 53 beta and Opera 54 developer releases for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now through our web portal if you want to take them for a test drive, though keep in mind not to use them for any production work.
