Today, August 10, 2016, openSUSE's Douglas DeMaio has informed the openSUSE Tumbleweed community about the new software versions that landed in the snapshots released last week.

About a week ago, we reported on the implementation of the latest Linux 4.7 kernel for the OpenSuSE Tumbleweed rolling release operating system. Now we would like to tell you a little bit about other popular open-source applications pushed to the software repositories of the popular GNU/Linux distribution, which more users are adopting lately.

Therefore, a total of three snapshots have been released for openSUSE Tumbleweed during the last few days, and they have brought small updates to the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client and K3b CD/DVD/BD burning tool for KDE Plasma 5. Additionally, the libzypp 16.2.1, GNOME Online Accounts 3.20.3, virt-viewer and OBS-service-source_validator were present too in snapshot 20160803.

LibreOffice 5.2.0.4 and Wireshark 2.0.5 have landed

The next snapshot, version 20160805, brought the recently released LibreOffice 5.2 office suite, as well as the world's best network protocol analyzer tool, Wireshark 2.0.5. Another important change introduced by snapshot 20160805 is the removal of the LXDM display manager, which was replaced with the more popular and customizable LightDM.

And lastly, snapshot 20160806, which is the last one released for openSUSE Tumbleweed at the time of writing this article, updated the InkScape SVG editor with more extensions, added Wayland-protocols 1.5 and btrfsprogs 4.7 for managing Btrfs filesystems under Linux kernel 4.7. Right now, the Tumbleweed devs are working hard also to bring you the KDE Plasma 5.7.2 desktop environment, which should land soon in the next snapshot.

In the meantime, you are invited to take the Alpha 3 development milestone of the upcoming openSUSE Leap 42.2 operating system for a test drive and report any bugs you might encounter. Why? Because the openSUSE devs want to polish the release of 42.2 before the first Beta build hits the streets, which should happen at the end of the month, according to the official release schedule.
