openSUSE Project's Dominique Leuenberger was proud to announce the availability of the recently released GNOME 3.24 desktop environment into the software repositories of the openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling release.

According to the developer, and to our knowledge, OpenSuSE Tumbleweed is now the first GNU/Linux distribution to offer the GNOME 3.24 packages to their users. We know that openSUSE is a distro mostly oriented towards the KDE Plasma desktop, but support for GNOME is provided at the same level of quality.

"Tumbleweed once again is the first (to my knowledge) to ship the just released GNOME 3.24.0 as part of its main repository. Being shipped to the users in less than 48 hours since the official release announcement is something we can only do thanks to all the automatic building and testing and the efforts put into the packages," said Dominique Leuenberger.

GCC 7 now available as an optional compiler

Besides shipping with the newest applications from the GNOME 3.24 Stack, the latest snapshots released for the openSUSE Tumbleweed operating system make GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 7 available as optional compiler for those who want to install it and use it to compile software from sources.

The distro is now powered by the Linux 4.10.4 kernel, as well as various of the latest software updates, including the Mozilla Firefox 52.0 web browser, QEMU 2.8.0 virtualization software, etc. More work was done by the YaST team to improve the desktop selection workflow, as well as to change the "system user" situation.

During the next weeks, there will be more snapshots released for openSUSE Tumbleweed, which promise to bring the recently released KDE Plasma 5.9.4 desktop environment and Linux kernel 4.10.5, but also to make GCC 7 the default compiler, though that might take more than a week or two. In the meantime, make sure you update your systems on a regular basis.
