KDE Plasma 5.8.2 desktop and Bash 4.4 should arrive as well

openSUSE developer Dominique Leuenberger informs the openSUSE Tumbleweed community about the latest GNU/Linux technologies and Open Source software projects that landed in the stable repositories.

According to the developer, many of the packages available for the OpenSuSE Tumbleweed rolling distribution are well in line with what the first Release Candidate brought to the upcoming openSUSE Leap 42.2 stable release, and it looks like a total of four snapshots introduced several important updates.

Among these, we can mention the KDE Plasma 5.8.1 and GNOME 3.22.1 desktop environments, KDE Applications 16.08.2 software suite, as well as the Boost 1.62 libraries. As such, we're urging all users of the openSUSE Tumbleweed operating system to update their installation as soon as possible to receive these packages.

"This was week 42 – The openSUSE LEAP week of the Year. It can’t be a co-incidence that the Release Candidate 1 was announced in Week 42, on the 2nd day (42.2 – European counting, we start our week on Monday, not on Sunday)," said Dominique Leuenberger. "But also in Tumbleweed things are not standing still."

Linux kernel 4.8.3 patched against "Dirty COW" bug arriving soon

In a tweet posted today, October 23, 2016, Mr. Leuenberger reveals that the Linux 4.8.3 kernel release, which was patched against the nasty "Dirty COW" bug that could have allowed a local attacker to gain administrative privileges, should land soon in the stable repositories of openSUSE Tumbleweed.

Also, it appears that the more recent KDE Plasma 5.8.2 desktop environment and GNU Bash 4.4 Unix shell will arrive as well for users of the openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling operating system in the snapshots that should be released during the week that starts October 24, 2016. Again, make sure that you install all the updates as soon as they're available.
