Today, December 13, 2016, openSUSE Linux developer Ludwig Nussel was proud to announce that the next major release of the openSUSE Leap operating system has entered development.

While many of you out there have just finished customizing their brand new OpenSuSE Leap 42.2 installations, it looks like the development team behind the RPM-based GNU/Linux distribution have no time to rest. That's why they're announcing today that openSUSE Leap 42.3 is open for development.

"42.2 is out of the door, time to relax and wait for the Christmas holidays, right? Well, far from that. We have to prepare for the next release. So for the Leap 42 line that means 42.3 based on SLE12 SP3. In anticipation of that OBS already has openSUSE:Leap:42.3 set up as copy of 42.2. It already accepts submissions," said Ludwig Nussel, SUSE Linux.

openSUSE Leap 42.3 to track the development of SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 SP3

As openSUSE Leap 42.2 was based on the packages from the commercial SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 2 (SP2) operating system, it was a no-brainer that the next major release, in this case, openSUSE Leap 42.3, would be based on SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 3 (SP3), due for release sometime in Q3 2017.

According to Ludwig Nussel, it looks like SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 3 is bound to hit the streets earlier than its regular November release, so that's why openSUSE Leap 42.3 is now open for development and ready to receive submissions of new packages, bug fixes, and the latest GNU/Linux technologies.

Therefore, openSUSE Leap 42.3 will have a smaller development cycle and should land a bit earlier than usual, which means that there won't be any major changes in the base system as the OS will continue openSUSE Project's vision of providing a rock-solid openSUSE Linux experience to its Leap users.
