The openSUSE Project announced on Monday that support for the openSUSE Leap 42.2 operating system ends this Friday, on January 26, 2018, urging users to upgrade to the latest release.

Announced two years ago on November 16, OpenSuSE Leap 42.2 is a minor release of openSUSE Leap 42 operating system series, which brought the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel and KDE Plasma 5.8 desktop environment, as well as many other improvements and up-to-date components. openSUSE Leap 42.2 was based on SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 2, but it will reach end of life this week on January 26.

"We are very pleased with the reliability, performance and longevity of Leap," said openSUSE member Marcus Meissner. "Both the openSUSE community and SUSE engineers have done a fantastic job with security and maintenance of the Leap 42 distribution; users can be confident that their openSUSE operating system is, and will continue to be, receiving bug fixes and maintenance updates until its End-of-Life."

Users must upgrade to openSUSE Leap 42.3

As openSUSE Leap 42.2 will reach its End-of-Life (EOL) phase, users will no longer receive software and security updates, thus making the operating system vulnerable to attacks. As such, the openSUSE Project urges all users of the openSUSE Leap 42.2 release to upgrade their installations as soon as possible to the latest openSUSE Leap 42.3 release by following the instructions provided here.

openSUSE Leap 42.3 was released last year on July 26 and will be supported until early 2019.  However, the openSUSE Project notes the fact that openSUSE Leap 42.3's end of life phase will depend on the release of the next major Leap series, namely openSUSE Leap 15, which is expected to arrive later this Spring. openSUSE Leap 15 will enter Beta phase next month and will be based on the SUSE Linux Enterprise 15.
