Benjamin Brunner of the SUSE Maintenance Security team informed the openSUSE community about the end of life (EOL) support for the openSUSE Leap 42.1 operating system.

Launched on November 4, 2015, OpenSuSE Leap 42.1 was supported with security and software updates for more than 18 months. Hardcore openSUSE fans should know that openSUSE Leap 42.1 was the first hybrid release of the distribution to use packages from the SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) operating system and from the community of developers that are building packages for openSUSE Linux.

Therefore, openSUSE Leap 42.1 made it possible to bridge the gap between matured and those newer packages that are found in the openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling operating system series. According to the SUSE Maintenance Security team, openSUSE Leap 42.1 received more than 1,500 updates, but it was officially discontinued on May 17, 2017, and will no longer be supported by SUSE.

"With the release of release-notes-openSUSE on May 17th, 2017 the SUSE sponsored maintenance of openSUSE Leap 42.1 has ended," said Benjamin Brunner in the mailing list announcement. "openSUSE Leap 42.1 is now officially discontinued and out of support by SUSE. The currently maintained stable release is openSUSE Leap 42.2, which will be maintained until the Q2/2018."

Here's how to upgrade to openSUSE Leap 42.2

If you're still using the openSUSE Leap 42.1 operating system on your computers, make sure that you upgrade it to the latest supported release, openSUSE Leap 42.2. Upgrading is easy and SUSE provides detailed information here, here and here, depending on the method you want to use for the upgrade process. openSUSE Leap 42.2 will receive support from SUSE for at least a year from today, until May 2018.

openSUSE Leap 42.2 will be maintained until six months after the release of openSUSE Leap 42.3, which is becoming openSUSE Leap 15 to be in full sync with the upcoming SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 operating system series. openSUSE Leap 15 is expected to launch in the last week of July 2017 if you want to wait until then to upgrade directly to it skipping the openSUSE Leap 42.2 release.
