14 DAY TRIAL // The openSUSE Education project seems to no longer have time for developing the openSUSE Leap-based openSUSE-Edu Li-f-e (Linux for Education) operating system, and it's looking for contributors.
A public announcement was made last week by OpenSuSE Project's Lars Vogdt to inform the community about the future of the openSUSE Education project, which tried to support schools in the past several years using the latest openSUSE Leap and SUSE Linux Enterprise technologies.
The latest release of the openSUSE-Edu Li-f-e (Linux for Education) operating system was based on openSUSE Leap 42.1, and the team appears to still spend a lot of time maintaining more than 460 packages in the openSUSE Education project, but did not manage to find new contributors to maintain its repositories or create a new release.
openSUSE Education isn't dead, at least not yet
Therefore, the openSUSE Education would like to appeal to the Linux community in an attempt to find any volunteers who want to take over the maintenance of the openSUSE-Edu Li-f-e operating system and its official website until they declare the project dead, which could happen after the release of openSUSE Leap 15.0.
"We will wait until the release of openSUSE Leap 15.0 before we will ask the openSUSE board to revoke openSUSE-Education as an openSUSE project," said Lars Vogdt. "It's been a fun ride for all of us and we very much hope that this won't be the end of openSUSE-Education but instead a new beginning for this great project!"
At the moment of writing, the old team is still working on updating the packages in the openSUSE Education repository, but they're more than happy to guide new contributors to take over the maintenance and shape it to their liking.
