The operating system won't be a rolling distro

openSUSE Project's Ludwig Nussel is announcing today that the rolling development phase of the upcoming openSUSE Leap 42.3 operating system is now up and running.

What this means exactly is that the download server will also serve development builds of OpenSuSE Leap 42.3 if they are good enough for testing, besides the latest OBS builds. However, you should know that this doesn't mean that openSUSE Leap 42.3 will follow a rolling release model because that's what openSUSE Tumbleweed is designed for.

"That means just like with Tumbleweed, the download server doesn't just serve the latest build OBS produces. A build only shows up there if the automated testing results of openQA are sufficiently green. So from now on until the gold master zypper dup will update step by step to the final 42.3," explains Ludwig Nussel in the announcement.

openSUSE Leap 42.3 to be based on SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 SP3

According to Mr. Nussel, the rolling development phase of the openSUSE Leap 42.3 operating system will stop when the GM (Gold Master) build hits the streets, which should happen sometime at the end of July 2017. openSUSE Leap 42.3 will be based on the commercial SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 3 (SP3) OS.

The roadmap for openSUSE Leap 42.3 shows us that until the release of the Gold Master, two stages will take place, namely the completion of bigger version updates by May 21, and package freeze stage, which starts on June 25. Just like the previous releases of openSUSE Leap 42, the 42.3 update will be a small one with various bug fixes and software updates.

In the mailing list announcement, Ludwig Nussel also reminds package maintainers that a smooth upgrade without surprises must be provided for users of the openSUSE Leap 42.2 operating system when 42.3 is launched, as well as the fact that they should not try to implement the latest and greatest technologies and carefully test their stuff before submission into the repositories.
