On January 26, 2017, openSUSE Project's Douglas DeMaio informed the Tumbleweed community about the latest package versions that landed last week through a total of five snapshots.

Before we dwell on the details of the new updates for OpenSuSE Tumbleweed, we'd like to tell you about a new package called transactional-update, which the openSUSE developers added in the repositories of the GNU/Linux distribution to boost the rolling updates that are offered to users multiple times per week.

"The new package called transactional-update [...] allows for more fluent handling of updates and upgrades for a rolling release. Tumbleweed users are encouraged to read the email and thread because the package has potential consequences for those using it if not used correctly," said DeMaio in today's announcement.

Here's what landed in openSUSE Tumbleweed lately

And now let's take a look at the latest updates for openSUSE Tumbleweed. First off, the distro is now powered by the Linux 4.9.4 kernel and uses an updated graphics stack based on the X.Org Server 1.19.1 display server and latest Mesa 13.0 release, which implements the RADV Radeon Vulkan driver for AMD Radeon GPUs.

The Flatpak 0.8.0 open-source application sandboxing and distribution framework arrived as well, along with the OSTree 2016.15 package, KDE Applications 16.12.1 software suite is included for KDE Plasma 5 users, and the fifth Release Candidate of Wine 2.0 is now available for those who want to run Windows apps and games.

Other than that, Tumbleweed users can now update their systems to the Apache 2.4.25, CMake 3.7.2, Snapper 0.4.1, FreeType 2.7.1, OpenType 1.8, Epiphany 3.22.5, QEMU 2.7.0, and libinput 1.6.0 new package versions. All these, along with numerous other small improvements are now ready for installation on your openSUSE Tumbleweed OS.

We recommend updating your Tumbleweed installations as soon as possible, and always keep them up to date for a more secure and reliable user experience. In the coming days, openSUSE Tumbleweed users should expect to receive many KDE-related updates for the KDE Framework 5.30.0 and KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS technologies.
