Oliver Brakmann from the OpenRA project, an open-source and cross-platform initiative to offer a reimplementation of the popular Command & Conquer games, announced the availability of a new stable release.

OpenRA Release 20170421 comes almost half a year since the previous stable release and adds a bunch of improvements and new features like HiDPI (High Dots Per Inch) font rendering, a brand new behavior for both Tiberian Dawn Obelisk and Red Alert Gap Generator, multiplayer improvements, muted Red Alert "shell map" background, and the ability to install assets on 32-bit OSes and from original RA95 CDs.

"With 43 developers producing just shy of 800 commits and touching almost 1800 files, this has very likely been one of our slowest release cycles ever. As such, the list of user-visible changes is not as long as you’ve come to expect in earlier years. However, behind the scenes, preparations for a fundamental transformation of the OpenRA engine are in the works," said Oliver Brakmann in the announcement.

The Dune 2000 mode received numerous improvements

Among other improvements implemented in OpenRA Release 20170421, we can mention that the Dune 2000 mod received seven new campaign missions, optimized graphics of the original game, and better gameplay match. Other than that, it looks like there are multiple under-the-hood improvements like a new trait conditions system, as well as simplified weapon definitions.

The actor vision was revamped as well, adding the ability for D2K actors to reveal themselves when attacking, RA active gap generators, and support for cliffs to block the vision in heightmap-enabled mods. It also looks like the in-game multiplayer server is now capable of listing games for all of the mods that are installed on your PC. You can download OpenRA Release 20170421 for GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating system right now.
