Alexander Pyhalov from the OpenIndiana project, an open-source, community-driven illumos Solaris operating system that continues the vision of OpenSolaris, announced today, May 3, 2017, the release of OpenIndiana Hipster 2017.04.

OpenIndiana 2017.04 represents a new major update to the "Hipster" series of the distribution, implementing various new features and updating several core components and applications. The most prominent change of this release is the integration of support for USB 3.0 devices.

The OpenSolaris-derived operating system now ships with an updated graphics stack based on the X.Org Server 1.18.4 display server and Mesa 13.0.6 3D Graphics Library, moves multiple user-space applications to the 64-bit architecture, and introduces a ca-certificates service to regenerate the CA (Certificate Authority) bundle as GnuTLS 3.4 becomes default TLS implementation.

"On some resource-constrained systems ca-certificates service can fail to start immediately after system install. Later SMF takes care and restarts it, but you can see error messages on first boot. The issue is being investigated," read the release notes.

The MATE 1.16 desktop environment is now included

Among other changes included in the OpenIndiana Hipster 2017.04 operating system, we can mention the revamp of the Intel KMS port, which should now work on almost all Intel graphics processing units, and the MATE desktop environment has been updated to version 1.16.

Updated apps in OpenIndiana Hipster 2017.04 include GTK+ 3.18.9, GVFS 1.26.0, libsmb 4.4.6, Rhythmbox 3.4.1, PulseAudio 10.0, Mozilla Firefox ESR 45.9.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.8.0, Privoxy 3.0.26, cdrtools 3.02a7, gThumb 3.2.9.1, Brasero 3.12.1, GStreamer 1.10.3, WebkitGTK+ 2.14.5, Vim 8.0.104, Emacs 25.2, and GNU nano 2.7.5.

The GStreamer 1.0 plugins have been integrated as well, the Nvidia Legacy 340.102 graphics driver is now available for users with Nvidia GPUs, GTK+ 3 compatibility was added to the Nimbus theme as OpenIndiana now starts shipping GTK+ 3 apps, and critical bugs were fixed for the Enlightenment desktop and Sound Juicer app.

The toolchain now consists of GCC 6 patches to allow the compilation of illumos-gate, Bison 3.0.4, Ruby 2.3, Groovy 2.4, Qt 5.8.0, Perl 5.24, Mercurial 4.1.3, Git 2.12.2, ccache 3.3.3, and Valgrind 3.12.0. OpenJDK 8 is the default OpenJDK version, and many server software components received new versions.
