Dominique Leuenberger from the openSUSE Tumbleweed development team announced today, May 8, what was implemented this week on the Tumbleweed version of the openSUSE Linux operating system.

First of all, we remind you that OpenSuSE Tumbleweed is a rolling-release branch of the openSUSE distro. New features implemented this week include Linux kernel 4.0.1 and the GNOME 3.16.1 desktop environment.

Additionally, there's some work in getting  AppStream Metadata in a stable form in all of openSUSE's software repositories, which means that the GNOME Software package manager will benefit from the metadata of Tumbleweed's main repos.

The above statement applies to any other Software Center application used in openSUSE Tumbleweed, and it's not possible for them to load the metadata from third-party software repositories as well. The GNOME:Factory repo is already publishing valid metadata.

"The openSUSE Conference was certainly a highlight this week. Yet, we managed to give you some snapshots in this time as well," says Dominique Leuenbergeryet on behalf of the openSUSE Tumbleweed team. "The current snapshot is being held up by some major changes."

What's next for openSUSE Tumbleweed

Among the some of the fresh Linux technologies that will be implemented in the next snapshot of openSUSE Tumbleweed, we can mention an update to the recently released KDE Plasma 5.3 desktop environment, and the implementation of the GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 5.0 compiler by default.

While the Ruby implementation will be updated to version 2.2 early next week, the Ruby 2.1 packages will be available in the main software repositories for applications/users who need it. As usual, we will keep you guys informed on the latest developments in openSUSE Tumbleweed Linux operating system as soon as we know more.
