The openSUSE Project, through Douglas DeMaio, has had the great pleasure of informing us that approximately 45,000 students from an Indonesian province are currently testing a pilot program powered by openSUSE Linux.

Dubbed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Utilization for Educational Quality Enhancement in Yogyakarta Province, the pilot project promises to enhance the computer usage knowledge of numerous Indonesian students, as it is set to become a nationwide educational program.

Mr. Mohammad Edwin Zakaria, a Linux and IT consultant for the Indonesian pilot program, is extremely confident that the project will become a model of ICT utilization in Indonesian's educational sector. "More and more education people and officials come to Yogyakarta to learn about how to implement information technology in basic education," reveals Mr. Zakaria for the OpenSuSE Project.

Singgih Raharjo, the department head of Yogyakarta Province’s Education Communication and Technology Office, adds that they are also providing a similar program for teachers, instructing them on how to make learning material for students. The program is a real success in Indonesia, and students have access to numerous materials created by teachers.

As a result, Yogyakarta Province's children have become more creative and smarter. "The results were shocking. The winners of the competition are not only centralized by students from the city, but also from villages,” Raharjo has said.

The pilot program is powered by ten servers with SLES 11 SP1

The initiators of the Indonesian educational pilot program have revealed the fact that they are currently using a data center consisting of approximately ten servers powered by the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 operating system and configured with high availability (HA).

The data center serves primarily as a learning management system (LMS) powered by the well-known open-source Moodle software, an Apache web server, and a MySQL database. Additionally, it is used as an internal software repository for the openSUSE stations employed in schools, as well as a file server, Internet proxy, and DNS.
