openSUSE Education Li-f-e 13.1, a distribution based on openSUSE, has been announced by the openSUSE Education team.

The Education Li-f-e edition of OpenSuSE is bundled with a lot of goodies that can be used by all circles of the academia, including students.

“We have put together a nice set of tools for everyone including teachers, students, parents and IT administrators. It covers quite a lot of territory: from chemistry, mathematics to astronomy and Geography. Whether you are into software development or just someone looking for Linux distribution that comes with everything working out of the box, your search ends here,” reads the official announcement.

Highlights of openSUSE Education Li-f-e 13.1:

• The Avogadro and Kalzium applications have been implemented. Avogadro is a software used in molecular modeling research, but it can also be used for teaching purposes. Kalzium is an interactive periodic table; • Math genius is an application that will help its users with algebra, geometry or statistics; • The small children can explore games and interactive pictographs to learn by using Gcompris and Little Wizard; • Bibletime has been implemented in order to help with the study the Bible, the Koran and other texts; • The Stellarium app has also been included and it will help students when learning astronomy; • Openshot & Audacity have been added and they can be used to direct and edit short films or to edit music; • A number of media players have been added, including VLC, MPlayer Rhythmbox, and Audacious; • Blender can be used to create 3D animations, GIMP to edit photographs and images, and InkScape to create vector graphics; • The complete LibreOffice suite has been implemented, along with VYM mind mapping and GNUCash finance; • Wine and Dosbox have been implemented to help users also run Windows apps.
